Featuring Glenna — A Bloggers’ Quilt Festival Quilter!

TGIF – It’s been a long week in our house!  I’m really looking forward to the weekend, you?  Today’s featured quilter is Glenna of Hollyhock Quilts!  Glenna has some fabulous quilts, and if you visit her blog you can see her vast collection of antique pieces.  I hope you enjoy getting to know Glenna better –
1. When did you begin quilting?
It’s hard to believe, but I’ve been quilting for about 30 years now.  Yikes!!  It’s the only thing in my life I’ve done that long except for my marriage!

2. Why do you quilt?
It has been my creative outlet for a long time.  I love the cameraderie that quilters share and the friendships I’ve made over the years are the best.
3. What is your favorite quilting tip?
Oh my!  There are so many!!  One of my favorites is from a long time quilting friend, Gloria Greenlee.  She shared that if you have a border that’s wonky, you need to do a running stitch by hand right next to the binding of the quilt.  Use a matching thread and you won’t even see it.  It’s saved a wavy border for me more than once!
4. What was your inspiration for your Quilt Festival quilt
I’m almost always inspired by antique quilts.  I have one with a very similar tulip shape with a triangle shape in the center of it.  I thought the heart would be a lot more fun and of course, rickrack looks good with everything!

5. Do you sew other things?
I really don’t.  I made a lot of clothes before I started quilting, but these days I resent even having to hem something!  Quilting is WAY more fun!!

6. Anything else you would like us to know about you?
Anyone who knows me knows my affinity for vintage fabric and feedsacks.  In fact, I wouldn’t have a quilting career without them.  Although, much of what I have done over the last few years has been of a more commercial nature, like designing fabric and publishing patterns and a book, my favorite thing to do is salvaging old pieces and making them into lovely art quilts that can be enjoyed in their second life.  I’m hoping to do more of that in the near future.

Thank you for sharing Glenna!  Your quilts are beautiful, and I agree completely – Quilts are way more fun!
Have a great weekend everyone -

Vintage Modern Challenge Style – Design Challenge

Hi there!  This exciting challenge came through my inbox and I thought I should share!

This challenge was created to celebrate the history of sewing by recognizing both SINGER® and Coats & Clark, who are both celebrating significant anniversaries this year (160th and 200th, respectively); as well as educate and inspire through the life and work of Mary Brooks Picken, the authority on fashion and dressmaking in the early and mid-1900s .

Here’s a video from Amy explaining the challenge:

Visit Amy’s site, here, for details about patterns, and to download free patterns that can be used for the challenge.  Also, Amy and her team have offered to give one of you two patterns of your choice, from Indygo Junction, to help you jump into the challenge.

To win:

Leave me a comment here, telling me your two most favorite patterns.

My current favorites are, In-style Suitcase Bag, and Uptown Top & Trousers, but it changes every time I look through them again!

I hope you are inspired to take on this challenge, and make something unique, and modern.

I’ll select a winner on Friday, January 27th, 2011.

Good luck and have fun!

Amy

Sweet Moments

All last week I was wanting and really needing to bake chocolate chip cookies for my family. I finally found the kitchen to myself, and took an hour to bake them!

20120122-230437.jpg
Baking these was my cookie break on saturday, from quilt math and a little pattern writing. It was a good break!

I thought I would share our favorite recipe, it’s from ” Once Upon A Tart…” which is full of delicious recipes.

Best Chocolate Chip Cookies
20 tablespoons, unsalted butter, softened
1 1/2 cups packed light-brown sugar
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
-
3 1/4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

1. Preheat oven to 350F degrees.
2. Cream butter and sugar together in a big bowl, using a whisk attachment attachment of an electric mixer on high speed, until they are fluffy and light lemon-yellow in color, about 5 minutes. With the mixer on low speed, beat in eggs one at a time, then vanilla.
3. In a separate bowl, whisk the flour, baking soda, and salt together. Gradually add this to the wet ingredients, using a paddle attachment of your mixer on low speed until no flour is visible . Then stir in chocolate chips.
4. Drop teaspoon size balls of cookie dough onto baking sheets, 1 1/2″ apart, and bake 10-12 minutes.
5. Pour a glass of milk and enjoy warm!

Hope your week is off to a great start – Amy
