Modern Mix :: Review & Giveaway

Posted on October 17th, by Amy in give away, review. 250 comments

I’m excited to share another new book with you today!  Modern Mix  by Jessica Levitt is all about using solid fabrics with your prints – as I love solids, I’m loving Modern Mix!

Jessica has beautifully used solids with prints, and not just white, I might add.  A great variety of Kona cottons have been selected, with stunning results.  In some projects the prints play a major roll, and others the solids are the lead.  Jessica encourages the reader to be fearless in fabric selections, and making the project your own.

There’s 16 projects total in Modern Mix, 7 modern quilts with great bags, and home decor projects interspersed.  Sure to be a source of inspiration for any sewist!

Chalk full of inspiration this book is a great addition to your bookshelf!

If you would like to win a copy of Modern Mix, leave me a comment, telling me what you would like to sew more of.

I’ll select a winner on Friday, October 21, 2011 – Good Luck!

Amy

  1. Love discovering your blog. I love your kite quilt! Very colorful but I love the pattern too. THank you for a chance to win a book!

  2. I really love making bags…so I’d like to make more of them! I love making quilts as well though – I’m sure I’d find lots of lovely things to make in Jessica’s book.

  3. I love the look of this book!
I’d love to sew more clothes for me, but I’ve not got the patience to make a garment fit properly so I guess more quilts would be great!
thanks for the chance to win.

  4. I want to finish things. LOL! I have so many started projects and quilt tops that need attention. I can’t seem to stop starting new ones, though. It’s almost like my brain is afraid that if I don’t start it now, the thought may be lost forever. :)

  5. The cover of that book makes me smile…love those circles and those beautiful red pillows! I would definately like to make more quilts. Seems like I get caught up making little things for people (and my boys) so much that I don’t have nearly as much time to work on quilts. Thank for the chance. Hope you have been able to wind down a bit from the Sewing Summit. Smiles~Beth

  6. I’d like to sew more blankets, bags, table runners, etc. Not enough time to get it all done! Thanks for sharing.

  7. I would like to sew more of anything at the moment, free time is so rare right now! BUT, I was just looking at Keyka Lou’s patterns, something small would be fun!

This year I’ve made 3 quilts as gifts so far (with 2 more to make for Christmas, and a baby quilt to be made by January), but only made an iPad cover and a Nintendo DS cover for myself. I just picked up a cross-stitch project for myself to take with me when I can’t take a quilt, very much on purpose!

can’t wait to get my hands on a copy of this book!!

  102. I’m just getting started quilting, and the only “real” quilt I’ve done so far was a table runner. (I’ve nearly finished the binding a baby quilt) I’d love to have an actual finish.

  106. I would just like to sew more of ANYTHING. With 2 young kids, one just getting over having his tonsils and adenoids removed last week, I rarely get time to turn my machine on at all.

  107. I would very much like to experiment with solids, this book and other things I’ve seen have been stirring my thoughts in this direction lately..I can see a lot of potential in this with simplified clean and well defined designs. It looks to me like a new wave of quilting is emerging.

  108. I would love to sew some pillows for my sad couch pillows I currently have. I really should be ashamed of them they are that bad, so much inspiration out there! Thanks for sharing the pictures from the book, love it!

  110. What I would like to sew more of?! Anything. It would be fun to learn how to sew clothing. Seems practical today. But on a more carefree side, I wouldn’t mind having a quilt for myself for whatever mood I am in – bold and vibrant, quiet and soft, etc. :)

  118. I would love to sew more quilts – well more considering the fact that I haven’t sewn even ONE! But it’s true . . . I would LOVE to sew a quilt for each one of my grandchildren. Not a kitschy children’s quilt mind you, but a quilt that they will be proud of in their ADULT home. And considering that I now have 11 (yep – you read that correctly – ELEVEN) grandchildren, I think it’s just about time I got started on this project!

I love making bags and quilts, so this book would be much appreciated and used, if I win. Thanks for the chance to win!

  128. As for me, I’d like to sew more SMALL projects!!! HA! I have been making lots of queen-size quilts, so if I sewed smaller projects more would get done! lol
This book has a lot of neat projects in it! Keeping my fingers crossed!

  129. I would like to sew more lab-sized quilt tops that someone else would quilt! I love the sewing part but the quilting isn’t my favorite part.

  130. I’d like to do a better job at picking solids to go with my prints! I would really like to do more tablerunners and mats, so that my kitchen table could reflect my joy in quilting. Thanks for the chance to win!

  131. I enjoy sewing lap quilts. Because they end up being a gift the whole family can share. I often find my gifts laid over a chair or couch in the living or family room…jpr

  132. This book looks amazing! I just want to make quilts, quilts, and more quilts. In my mind, I have plans for other projects, but when it actually comes to time to start at the machine, the pull of the quilt gets me every time!

  133. I want to sew more quilts!!!! If I didn’t work a full time desk job I’d quilt all day long.

    quilts! :)
Thank you for the chance and for a great giveaway!
    Blessings~
    Lori-Marie

  136. I would love to make one of the handbags. Also some of the home decor items. I really could use some new cushions on the couch.

  137. I would like to sew more curtains and pillows for my house
    Digicats {at} Sbcglobal {dot} Net

  138. Right now I would love to sew more of anything! My sewing mojo is missing so I just want to sew. But when I do sew – I want to do some seasonal wall quilts to put on the back of my front door. Currently we only have a Halloween one which is great this time of year but not so great the rest of the year.

    Thanks for the giveaway.

  139. I would love to sew more pillows. I have at least a dozen I am interested in making but haven’t started! I can make a quilt or table runner like nothing, but for some reason I can’t get started on a pillow. LOL

  140. I just made my first baby quilt this past month. I am hooked! Next I would like to sew my first quilt for my bed!

  141. Bags! I have an addiction to bags, and fabric, so I should probably start combining those more often.

  142. I’d like to sew more sundresses and/or costumes. I love making clothes for myself because they actually fit that way and I love making costumes because I’m always so excited to see them finished!

  143. I’d like to make more solid colour quilts, there is a real challenge to get it right and I take my sewing cap off to the Amish quilters, who set the bar so high and did.

  144. I have just got back into sewing a few clothes, I would love to keep going with that and make heaps more for my children and myself, we have so many quilts now I need to take a break.

  145. I would like to sew more big quilts. I tend to do smaller projects because of time limitations – my job interferes with my hobbies.

  146. I would like to use more winter holiday fabrics now. This is the 1st day of really “chillified” weather. Piglet and blustery weather puts in the mood for holiday sewing. This is the same reason I love to start working on Spring prints in February and March during snow storms :) Always the promise of the season yet to come!

  147. like many others, I’d like to just sew more…but especially for myself. sometimes even just hemming or mending. and quilting is very satisfying in a creative way.
