If you don’t know me yet, my name is Amy Ellis. I’m a new designer for Moda with my first line, Modern Neutrals, shipping next month!

I came to designing fabric by way of my books, Modern Basics, Modern Basics II and Modern Neutrals are available now, and Think Big – will be available in December. More on that one later ;)

Modern Neutrals by Amy Ellis - AmysCreativeSide.com

Since writing Modern Neutrals, I’ve found a devotion to neutral fabrics, and loved selecting clean and clear neutral colors to have my fabric designs printed in. And we popped in a bit of color too – I still love saturated color, and couldn’t resist!

With the fabric line, I have self-published five quilt patterns, you can find printed patterns and pdf patterns in my shop, along with details about sizes included, and fabric requirements.  Moving on, here’s a few of the questions answered :

When did you start quilting? Tell us about your first quilt.

I taught myself to quilt, shortly after I became a mom. I had learned to sew garments as a girl, but was drawn to quilting later on. I started looking for information and books on quilting everywhere I went. A few years later, our oldest, Gabriella is 14, Emmalie is 10, Sophia is 9 and Owen is 7 – they all have more than enough quilts to snuggle with!

My first quilt, actually had flannel for batting, and was quite small – alternating 9-patches that finished at 3″and the quilt measured 27″ square. I also folded the backing to the front for binding, because I had a hard time visualizing how binding worked. Now, I’m very quick with a binding!

When did you fall in LOVE with quilting/ textiles? and Why?

I fell in love with quilting as I realized how therapeutic it was for me! As a mom with little people around, constantly creating more messes, my seams stayed together, and the results were beautiful. My love of textiles has been a lifelong attraction. My mom is a seamstress too, and fabric was always around the house – thus my learning to sew at the age of 10.

What  is the best part of your design process?

I love it when everything comes together! I had a moment before spring Market, when I realized that I had been involved in the design process from the very beginning, to the very end. I love being involved in the whole process, and seeing my vision realized, in fabric.

I love the color……

Purple. There’s so many nuances!

When I teach classes or workshops, I love…..

Connecting with fellow quilters, and encouraging them to tackle a new project. There’s always a couple of quilters with a big personality to keep the group engaged and having fun!

This project features a layer cake, charm pack or mini charm, but what is your all time favorite moda precut?

My favorite Moda precut is the Layer Cake! There’s so many different ways to use that 10″ of fabric!

For Market, we all made the same pattern with our fabric, and I decided to split my fabrics, warm and cool.  This quilt is so fun to make, and quick – I have been thinking about re-making it in the charm or mini charm version! It would be a great pillow on the couch too!
