1. When did you begin quilting?

I began quilting almost 3 years ago. Like lots of people I learned to sew in high school home ec classes. I made pajama pants and a pillow and that was it. I started sewing again when my mom got me a little singer machine for Christmas 3 1/2 years ago. 6 months into having the machine I started quilting and never looked back! I made quilts for some family members that Christmas and I didn’t trust myself (or my machine) to quilt it. So I handquilted 3 quilts in 3 1/2 months! Oh, did my fingers ever hurt! The next year I got my Brother and started machine quilting.

Hi all!  Today’s featured quilter is Marjorie!  Marjorie has  some fantastic quilts and great tips – I hope you enjoy getting to know Marjorie more!

1. When did you begin quilting?

In the late ’80′s, I went rock climbing with my oldest brother’s ex-girlfriend who offered to help me to sew a winter parka. Being easily distracted by bright shiny objects….I noticed the quilt projects she was working on, and the rest is history. I still have the parka, the first project and the girlfriend ( whom I normally introduce as my sister).

 2. Why do you quilt?

Because my painting sucks and I need a creative outlet. And I hate to be cold. This way I can sit under quilts both while and after I make them.

Try every new trend and … Read More »

1.When did you begin quilting?

I started quilting in May 2010. I had been doing some basic sewing of kids’ clothes at that point, but was intimidated by choosing all those coordinating fabrics required for a quilt. My friend Kathy from Magnolia Designs was doing a wonderful charity to provide quilts for babies in our local Children’s Hospital NICU, and convinced me that if I could sew a dress, I could make a quilt. I committed to making 3 quilts for the cause- in gratitude for my 3 healthy children. I guess you could say I became smitten with the process, I haven’t stopped since!

Today’s featured quilter is Vicki!  Vicki is a friend online that I happily met last summer, and I was so excited when her name popped up as a feature nomination!  I hope you enjoy getting to know Vicki better –

1. When did you begin quilting?

I made my first quilt with my grandma when I was 13, and I started quilting for keeps later on, about 14 years ago.

2. Why do you quilt?

I quilt because…I love it. I enjoy trying out different patterns and fabrics, and as a busy mom, I like doing something that is just for me. I like making things because they stay done and don’t have to be repeated (like all kinds of housework).

3. What is your favorite quilting tip?

My favorite quilting tip–when you are sewing together long pieces, … Read More »

1. When did you begin quilting?
2 1/2 years ago, I was pregnant for the first time.  I found myself really wanting a special quilt for my daughter.  I looked around for a pattern, hoping my mom could make a quilt, yet nothing really jumped out at me.  My hubby and I decided that we wanted a Charley Harper theme for her bedroom, and so that became the inspiration behind the quilt I knew I wanted for her room.  I took an applique class at a local store and from there I designed and created my very first quilt.  I’ve been quilting ever since.

1.  When did you begin quilting?

I began quilting in the late 80s. I had been married a few years and was about to start graduate school.  The Toronto school board had many interesting continuing education programs, and I thought that quilting sounded interesting.  I went into it thinking that quilting was all hand work, but when I found out you could use this new thing called a rotary cutter and do all your piecing and quilting on the machine, I was sold!  I bought the cheapest sewing machine I could find and wrestled a few bed-sized quilts through it.  The poor thing.  FMQ was a painful experience for us both, but I kept at it.  When my daughter was born in 1993, I pretty … Read More »

Happy Friday!  Today’s featured quilter is Abby – Abby blogs at Crafts by Abby, and I’m excited to share her quilts and interview with you here today –

1. When did you begin quilting?

I started quilting in 2006 when I was 26 years old. My great-grandmother had passed away and we found a gazillion little squares she had cut and the startings of a quilt. I decided I’d be the family member to learn how to quilt and finish it for her, and that’s just what I did. I found a little book that was aimed at teaching teens/tweens how to quilt and made a “practice” baby quilt for a friend. I learned everything else I know on the internet! It’s been a little out of control since then!

2. Why do you quilt?

I love … Read More »

Hi there!  I’m back on track with the features, and today we begin with Mary from Molly Flanders.  I hope you enjoy getting to know Mary better, and seeing her quilts here.

1. When did you begin quilting?
I began quilting about 23 years ago.  My degree is in Early and Middle Childhood Education and I taught school for several years after college.  When my husband and I had our first daughter, Molly, I decided to try staying home for a while.  I can remember making a bet with myself that I could teach myself to quilt and that would be my ‘outlet’.  Sewing was a big part of my young years.  My mom, sister and grandmother were very accomplished seamstresses.  I also had several relatives that quilted, so I had plenty of … Read More »

1. When did you begin quilting?

I began quilting nearly 4 years ago. I needed a hobby and started looking around for dress making classes. During my searches online I discovered fabric shops, in particular patchwork shops. It was around the time Amy Butler’s Belle range was available and I fell in love with the orange and blue colourway. The real clincher was going to a local quilt show and buying a rotary cutter and mat. Now I could play with all that lovely fabric I’d been seeing. My quilt of 8 inch squares was crooked, none of the corners match up and my hand quilting was all wrong but I really enjoyed every bit of making … Read More »

1.  When did you begin quilting?

I began quilting last year – in May when I bought a new sewing machine. Prior to that I wasn’t sewing almost at all, because my first sewing machine didn’t want to cooperate with me:)

2. Why do you quilt?

When I was pregnant I discovered on the internet lots of gorgeous fabrics – these fabrics wasn’t then available in Poland, so I started buying patchwork fabrics in US online shops. At first I thought that I will be using them just for sewing clothes for my daughter, but when I was looking for some help at Polish forum (while sewing a dress), I … Read More »

Counting down to Bloggers’ Quilt Festival, I’m featuring quilters from last fall all week long!  I hope you enjoy getting to know Sandra better ::

1. When did you begin quilting?

I began in 1998 and then my life really changed in 2005 as I started on my journey as a quilt appraiser and historian. In 2008 I became an American Quilter’s Society certified quilt appraiser, one of the first two in Utah (quite an honor as there are only about 95 in the entire United States). What a dream job – people actually pay me to look at their quilts. It is gratifying to help people learn more about history through antique quilts and also to realize the value of their newly made quilts and their hard work.

2. Why do you quilt?

How can one resist. It is a joy … Read More »

Counting down to Bloggers’ Quilt Festival, (Are you ready!?)  I’m featuring quilters from last fall all week long!  I hope you enjoy getting to know Sandra better ::

1.When did you begin quilting?

I started in 1998, lured in by my sister Donna and mother Georgia who were already quilters. I was an avid cross stitcher at the time and started with a needleturn applique project (handwork) and the rest is history. I was immediately hooked and quickly started creating my own designs and teaching classes. I especially enjoy hand applique and hand quilting.

2.Why do you quilt?

Because I love it! I delight in making lots of different types of quilts: art quilts in wild colors, funky log cabins, redrock landscapes. My current focus is reproducing antique quilts in my collection. I really enjoy getting … Read More »
