Modern Neutrals :: Placid Curves

Posted on June 19th, by Amy in finished quilt, Modern Neutrals. 8 comments

Placid Curves is a showstopper! I’ve watched a number of people flip through Modern Neutrals, and nearly every one had to stop and look at Placid Curves just a bit longer than the rest. While there are a lot of tiny squares and rectangles, there are actually not any curves – simply the illusion of such.  It’s strip-pieced too – much simpler than it looks!

Placid Curves :

Placid Curves measures 84″ x 96″ with fabric and block requirements for a throw size included.

Expertly pieced by Audrie of Blue is Bleu!

Modern Neutrals :: Piked Peaks

Piked Peaks is a controlled scrappy quilt, made with half-square triangle units.  I fell in love with the layout and had to make it!

Pieced by me – on my Baby Lock Melody.

Modern Neutrals :: In Motion

Posted on June 18th, by Amy in finished quilt, Modern Neutrals. 4 comments

In Motion, is one of my favorite quilts in the book! With lots of half-square triangle units, this quilt is not  a quick project, but SO worth the time and energy! My girls helped me press all those HST units, having an assistant or two is always helpful :) I shared about my fabric selection and classification process in this post.

In Motion :

In Motion measures 72″ x 72″ with fabric and block requirements for a baby size included.

Modern Neutrals :: Double Diamonds

Posted on June 18th, by Amy in finished quilt, Modern Neutrals. 4 comments

Double Diamonds is one of the more intricate designs in the book, but a fun challenge! The blocks can be turned lots of different ways to make different patterns – I had a hard time deciding which way to set them for the book.  I shared about my fabric selection and classification process in this post.

Double Diamonds  measures 60″ x 72″ with fabric and block requirements for a baby size included.

Modern Neutrals :: Digital Pinwheel

Digital Pinwheel is one of the more simple designs in the book, I love the graphic sense to the quilt, and the subtle movement in the depth of the fabric tones. I shared about my fabric selection and classification process in this post.

Modern Neutrals :: Circuit Board

Posted on June 17th, by Amy in finished quilt, Modern Neutrals. 18 comments

Modern Neutrals has been available for purchase just over a month, and I thought it time to share a little more about the project!  This book was different than my other two, in that I didn’t look for collections of neutral fabrics (there aren’t many), instead I looked for the neutral prints within fabric collections and went from there. I would guess that many of you have a nice collection of neutral fabrics already in your stash that would be great for these projects!

As I collected fabric, I began to classify it by depth of tone, in the book all the fabrics are labeled A-D, with A being the lightest.  After classifying the fabrics, it was a matter of discerning the undertones of each, not all neutrals work well together – ha! – and making adjustments to my plans, as … Read More »

Simple Sampler Quilt-Along :: Finished!

Posted on June 10th, by Amy in finished quilt, quilt-along. 10 comments

If you follow me on instagram, you saw a few peeks at this quilt over the weekend.  I am so happy with the finished product! This being my first foray into quilting with rulers on the long-arm, I learned a ton, and look forward to my next one – in fact if you have a suggestion of rulers to use/purchase, I would love a little input.

Since you can’t see much of the quilting, I took close-up of a couple of my favorite blocks -

I spiraled in to the center in a square, then added graduated loops in the triangles.  All the sashing has figure 8′s, that grew more consistent, the more I quilted.

This one has a pebbled center, with double loops in the print, and graduated lines in the corners.  I had a lot of fun thinking up and trying … Read More »

Modern Basics II :: To The Point

Posted on February 15th, by Amy in finished quilt, Modern Basics. 2 comments

To The Point graces the cover of Modern Basics II- It’s two color variations of the same block, twisted and turned to make a dramatic secondary pattern.  The dynamics of the patterns look great in small scale prints as well – I can’t wait to see your version!

To the Point measures 60″ x 72″

Designed and pieced by me with my Baby Lock Melody

Quilted by Natalia Bonner

Fabrics are Kona Cottons by Robert Kaufman

Modern Basics II :: Zipped Path

Posted on February 14th, by Amy in finished quilt, Modern Basics. 1 Comment

Zipped Path was almost a black and white quilt, but I found these beautiful prints by Dear Stella and knew the direction to take the quilt!  Using a variety of fabrics of similar tones results in a calming quilt,  and it’s fun to make.

Zipped Path measures 50″ x 60″

Designed and pieced by me with my Baby Lock Melody

Fabrics are from Dear Stella

Modern Basics II :: Modern Cross-Stitch

Posted on February 14th, by Amy in finished quilt, Modern Basics. 1 Comment

Modern Cross-Stitch is a simple, graphic design.  I love texture and the feel of the Cross Weave fabrics, they tend to be a bit thicker than most quilting cottons and they quilt up beautifully.  Of course this would be stunning in prints as well – what would you use?

Modern Cross-Stitch measures 68″ x 85″
