Vintage Notions :: Review & Giveaway

Posted on March 16th, by Amy in give away, review. 122 comments

I have a special book to share with you today, it is a piece of history brought to light, and highlights the art of handmade!

Vintage Notions (as in ideas) is a big book chalk full of insights and inspiration.

Amy Barickman has beautifully compiled inspirational essays, cleaver sewing patterns, cooking basics, and beautiful illustrations from the work of Mary Brooks Picken.  Mary was an innovator of her time (1886-1981), she worked diligently to teach women the art of sewing, dressmaking, designing, millinery and cookery.  Women everywhere sang her praises, as she encouraged them to find happiness, and satisfaction in all aspects of life.  AND many of these principles can still be applied to my life today!

The book is broken down into months, as our projects vary with each season.  I love how it’s laid out!

Quilt Fiesta! surprising designs from Mexican tiles :: Review

Posted on February 28th, by Amy in give away, review. 122 comments

I’m participating in yet another fantastic blog tour!  ¡Quilt Fiesta! by Cheryl Lynch -

Cheryl has taken the inspiration that she found while on vacation in Mexico, and made beautiful quilts!  The results are appealing and fun!  Cheryl shares photographs from her travels, and a bit of history about Puebla where the most desirable tiles are made.  Cheryl then continues to share her tried and true methods for appliqué and paper piecing, and reminds us all that perfection is over-rated!

That sounds familiar!  : )

I’m so glad that we are of the same mindset Cheryl!

There are 10 fabulous quilt projects based on the tiles shown on the cover.  My favorite part in the projects is that the appliqué is broken down into manageable pieces, often finished on the individual block before assembling the quilt top.

And the secondary design … Read More »

Calypso Swing — Giveaway!

Posted on February 16th, by Amy in give away. 413 comments

I recently “met” Cara.  She emailed me about Calypso Swing, and we struck up a conversation.  One thing led to another and I recieved a pile of fat quarters in the mail! The best part? She sent an extra set, to share with one of you!

Calypso Swing is the brain child of Mark Cesarik, and Free Spirit produced this line of fabric.  Cara is Mark’s wife, and is the crafty, quilter blogger, sharing her projects with Mark’s fabric!  I asked Mark a few questions so we could get to know him better :

Calypso Swing is your first foray into fabric, what made you decide to put your art onto fabric?
Calypso Swing is my first fabric collection with Free Spirit, however, I have been designing fabrics under the SewBettie Moniker for … Read More »
