Modern Neutrals :: Placid Curves

Posted on June 19th, by Amy in finished quilt, Modern Neutrals. 8 comments

Placid Curves is a showstopper! I’ve watched a number of people flip through Modern Neutrals, and nearly every one had to stop and look at Placid Curves just a bit longer than the rest. While there are a lot of tiny squares and rectangles, there are actually not any curves – simply the illusion of such.  It’s strip-pieced too – much simpler than it looks!

Placid Curves :

Placid Curves measures 84″ x 96″ with fabric and block requirements for a throw size included.

Expertly pieced by Audrie of Blue is Bleu!

Modern Neutrals :: Piked Peaks

Piked Peaks is a controlled scrappy quilt, made with half-square triangle units.  I fell in love with the layout and had to make it!

Piked Peaks measures 48″ x 60″ with fabric and block requirements for a smaller baby size included.

Pieced by me – on my Baby Lock Melody.

Modern Neutrals :: In Motion

In Motion, is one of my favorite quilts in the book! With lots of half-square triangle units, this quilt is not  a quick project, but SO worth the time and energy! My girls helped me press all those HST units, having an assistant or two is always helpful :) I shared about my fabric selection and classification process in this post.

In Motion :

In Motion measures 72″ x 72″ with fabric and block requirements for a baby size included.

Pieced by me!

Modern Neutrals :: Double Diamonds

Posted on June 18th, by Amy in finished quilt, Modern Neutrals. 8 comments

Double Diamonds is one of the more intricate designs in the book, but a fun challenge! The blocks can be turned lots of different ways to make different patterns – I had a hard time deciding which way to set them for the book.  I shared about my fabric selection and classification process in this post.

Modern Neutrals :: Digital Pinwheel

Digital Pinwheel is one of the more simple designs in the book, I love the graphic sense to the quilt, and the subtle movement in the depth of the fabric tones. I shared about my fabric selection and classification process in this post.

Modern Neutrals :: Circuit Board

Posted on June 17th, by Amy in finished quilt, Modern Neutrals. 18 comments

Modern Neutrals has been available for purchase just over a month, and I thought it time to share a little more about the project!  This book was different than my other two, in that I didn’t look for collections of neutral fabrics (there aren’t many), instead I looked for the neutral prints within fabric collections and went from there. I would guess that many of you have a nice collection of neutral fabrics already in your stash that would be great for these projects!

As I collected fabric, I began to classify it by depth of tone, in the book all the fabrics are labeled A-D, with A being the lightest.  After classifying the fabrics, it was a matter of discerning the undertones of each, not all neutrals work well together – ha! – and making adjustments to my plans, as … Read More »

Modern Neutrals & Big Thanks!

Posted on May 10th, by Amy in Modern Neutrals. 10 comments

My very own pile of Modern Neutrals arrived yesterday afternoon!

I love having a pile to share with friends and family, and this time I’m sending books to a special group of ladies that helped make this book a reality.  While writing and attempting to meet my deadlines, I quickly came to the realization that I couldn’t keep up with my family, and get everything done.  So, I sought out a few blog friends, to help sew quilt tops!

Mary, Trish, Sherri, Kendra, Audrie, April and Amy all pieced a quilt top and eliminated a little bit of stress for me.  Thank you, thank you, ladies! I was so blessed to have your help! I’ll be sending a book to you – right away!

Have a great weekend -

Amy

Modern Neutrals : A Fresh Look at Neutral Quilt Patterns

Posted on April 17th, by Amy in Modern Neutrals. 24 comments

I’ve been keeping a big secret from all of you…last year I actually wrote two books! My first copy of Modern Neutrals arrived yesterday afternoon – yay! After all the work is done, it’s is so great to hold it in my hands now!

The inspiration for Modern Neutrals came when my husband, Joe, reminded me that not everyone loves big and bold color as much as I do.  It was a fun challenge to work with neutral fabrics, and create interesting designs that I loved making into quilts!  The subtleties in the neutral tones are great for creating beautifully textured quilts. I kinda fell in love with the neutral palette while designing and writing this book.

Modern Neutrals includes 15 quilt patterns, many of them in multiple sizes, to offer you lots of options.  The … Read More »
