Just in case you are starting now, these will catch you up -

So now it’s time to make our blocks for week three :)  You have squares down now – right?  This week I have two new techniques for you, basics that will become second nature, with practice.  Ready?

Happy Monday!  I’m all set and ready to share the next two blocks, are you ready!?  Just in case you are starting now, these will catch you up -

I have a flickr group here too!  Amy’s Creative Side on Flickr

Also, if you have one block smaller than the other, most likely your seam allowance is a teeny bit big.  If you were making the same block for an entire quilt it wouldn’t matter too much, you could just trim them all to the same size.  With this sampler, you could trim all to the same size when you find your smallest block after sewing them all. Or, if you would like to have more accurate seams check out my tutorial – Sewing Accurate 1/4″ Seams.

Simple Sampler Quilt Along — Week 1

Posted on June 22nd, by Amy in quilt-along. 57 comments

Hi there!  We are home now and inflicted with the usual bug bites and camping exhaustion :)  I went to bed at 10 last night, which I rarely do, but really needed some solid sleep.  This week I’m starting with 2 basic blocks to get us started, and I’m going to share some of the most basic steps to encourage those of you without experience thus far.

To begin, have your iron & ironing board, starch if you like (I really, really like!) cutting board, ruler and cutting mat out and ready to use.

I like starch because it gives the fabric a crisp finish and helps with stubborn bolt creases.

Just be sure to treat all your fabric the same, if you starch some, starch all.  It also tightens the grain, causing it to shrink just a tad.

After ironing out your fabric, … Read More »

I’m so excited that some of you are wanting to quilt with me!  If you are new to quilting, not sure where to start, or just love sharing in the experience – you are in the right spot!  We will start with the most basic of blocks and proceed to a few more challenging, feel free to work at your own pace too – no pressure :)

My desire is to introduce all the basic, necessary skills for a quilter.  As you see there are 16 blocks, each is 12″ with the sashing (white space between blocks) the quilt finishes at 58 inches square.  I have the fabrics pictured in the quilt, 1/2 yard of 8 fabrics.  More than enough :)  if you are pulling scraps the largest square we cut will be 7 3/4″, just find lots of scraps that … Read More »

Zig-Zag Quilt Along Links

Posted on August 23rd, by Amy in quilt-along. 24 comments

This post is a summary of the zig-zag quilt along done in the Old Red Barn Co. Quilt Along Flickr group.Fabric Requirements** To make a 40″ square baby quilt – you need 10 fat quarters for the top, 1/2 yard for the binding, and 1 1/2 yards for the back.

** To make a 48×60″ throw quilt – you need 15 fat quarters for the top, 1/2 yard for the binding, and 2 1/2 – 3 yards for the back. Depends on how much piecing you add to the back.

The big difference with the bed size quilts – different size squares cut. It is to better use your fabric without too much waste. The quilt will be graphic and modern.

**To make a 64×88″ twin size quilt – you need 11 – 1/2 yard cuts, 1 yard for the binding, and … Read More »

The Quilted Quilt

Posted on August 14th, by Amy in finished quilt, quilt-along, work in progress. 61 comments

Usually I wait until I have bound and washed a quilt to post, but this quilting was so inspired and I love it! I had actually thought I would be selling this quilt, as my girls are no longer babies (and I’m not having more!). BUT, Sophia claimed it, we “tried it on” her, and after all the quilting I’ve grown pretty attached to it. It will be staying here! Even Joe mentioned it would be a little sad to sell it since I’ve put so much effort/time into it!

Here it is – do you see my addition?

There’s a heart, stippled right there -There’s a bit of puckering on one side of the heart – if I do it again I would do the heart first. Live and learn :) I’m hoping it … Read More »

Quilt Along Top

Posted on June 15th, by Amy in quilt-along. 64 comments

Hi all! I managed to get my quilt top together! I love all the colors and beautiful prints. It is SO big!

My helpers were holding it down while the wind was blowing :) I am still working out the batting and backing, really just crossing my fingers! Part of the quilt-along this week is a long-arm quilting giveaway :)

I’m super behind in my reader – I can’t seem to keep up with it since school’s been out! Maybe I’ll do that tomorrow instead of sewing . . . maybe :)

Blessings~Amy

Quilt Along Progress

Posted on June 11th, by Amy in My kids, quilt-along. 34 comments

I have to admit it – I’ve been overwhelmed by the project I took on. A queen, almost king sized quilt! What was I thinking??

To have a few less pieces to deal with I made 4-patches of my blocks. Great idea! I had decisions to make for each block but not all at the same time, and I did it while watching tv in the evening after the kids went to bed :)

Before I sewed my groups together I laid a few out to get an idea of the final results -

This is a quarter of my blocks, I’m now full of excitement and energy to get it together! For today I’m taking a little break though — I took my machine in for servicing. Thankfully the little shop in town has a 24 … Read More »

Catching up

Posted on June 7th, by Amy in quilt-along, random. 33 comments

I feel like I’ve had lots to write all week, but no words to make a decent post. I am happily here with the kiddos, and a few runny noses . . . summer colds are the worst, don’t you think?

I posted the music poll after getting a nice comment about how the music player has seemingly caused computer problems. Joe, had warned me that this day would come. . . I will remove it this coming week.

I understand more now after spending some time here, and realizing the time it takes for my blog to load – above all, I know that I want as many people welcome here as possible. And little extras take a good amount of time to load, and I would rather put that time into pictures loading. :)

Instead … Read More »
