Simple Sampler Quilt Along – Sashing/Top Construction

Hi friends!  How was your weekend?  Did you pack everything you could into those precious hours?  I sure did!  Joe and I had a great time celebrating our 11th anniversary.  He had reservations to the restaurant that we thought we went to the night he proposed to me.  Turned out to be a newer restaurant, with amazing food, so we were happy!  The rest of the weekend was full of family, friends and sewing – all the way around good!  Now I just need to catch up on some sleep and get myself on my self-proposed schedule this week before school starts…I’ll let you know how that goes.  All I have to say is “I’m a night owl”.

Now that we have all the blocks made, it’s time to put them into a complete quilt … Read More »

Hi there!  How was your weekend?  We had a quiet family weekend, which was perfect after the last week of travel, and getting readjusted to life at home again.  I’m thinking about school starting again and working out schedules for me and the kids!  Two and a half weeks before we start back up again – sniff, sniff – I’ve really enjoyed our relaxed summer.

Anyway

This is our last week of blocks!  I’m so excited to see these quilts come together – I hope you are too!

Our first block this week is a classic star – Aunt Eliza’s Star:

Here’s what you need:

In white/solid –

4 – 4 1/2″ squares

2 – 5 1/2″ squares

In print –

1 – 4 1/2″ square

2 – 5 1/2″ squares

Set aside the smaller squares for a few minutes, we are making hourglass blocks.  Draw your diagonal, sew on both … Read More »

Hi there quilting friends!  I hope you had a great weekend – we spent the weekend with family celebrating a wedding.  More on that later, we have some blocks to make!

First up this week is Mosaic #10, I’ve also seen these called Dutch Windmills:

Here’s what you need:

8 – 4″ solid

8 – 4″ print, one print or same color family

Mark the center and make your HST’s, just like you’ve done in the past few weeks.

Trim on the 45 degree line to 3 1/2″, then layout.  Pin, sew and press your rows.

I mixed up my order and ended up switching things up a bit, of course I see now how I to fix it.

Continue to work in rows … Read More »

Hi friends!  I hope you had a great weekend – it seemed like some of you took the weekend to catch up on blocks!  I did some sewing, and worked on understanding wordpress more.  Many of you have asked if I had help designing the blog – YES, I do not understand all the behind the scenes workings, like servers and what not, but Amy does!  Ever since Amy announced her blog design business, I knew that she would be the one to help me move to wordpress, and now she has.  Many many thanks to Amy for the hours spent reworking things!

There are still links that need to be fixed, so if you find something that isn’t working, please try not to be frustrated and send me an email – I will do my best to fix it and … Read More »

Happy Monday!  I’m all set and ready to share the next two blocks, are you ready!?  Just in case you are starting now, these will catch you up –

I have a flickr group here too!  Amy’s Creative Side on Flickr

Also, if you have one block smaller than the other, most likely your seam allowance is a teeny bit big.  If you were making the same block for an entire quilt it wouldn’t matter too much, you could just trim them all to the same size.  With this sampler, you could trim all to the same size when you find your smallest block after sewing them all. Or, if you would like to have more accurate seams check out my tutorial – Sewing Accurate 1/4″ Seams.

Simple Sampler Quilt Along — Week 1

Posted on June 22nd, by Amy in quilt-along. 57 comments

Hi there!  We are home now and inflicted with the usual bug bites and camping exhaustion :)  I went to bed at 10 last night, which I rarely do, but really needed some solid sleep.  This week I’m starting with 2 basic blocks to get us started, and I’m going to share some of the most basic steps to encourage those of you without experience thus far.

To begin, have your iron & ironing board, starch if you like (I really, really like!) cutting board, ruler and cutting mat out and ready to use.

I like starch because it gives the fabric a crisp finish and helps with stubborn bolt creases.

Just be sure to treat all your fabric the same, if you starch some, starch all.  It also tightens the grain, causing it to shrink just a tad.

After ironing out your fabric, … Read More »

I’m so excited that some of you are wanting to quilt with me!  If you are new to quilting, not sure where to start, or just love sharing in the experience – you are in the right spot!  We will start with the most basic of blocks and proceed to a few more challenging, feel free to work at your own pace too – no pressure :)

My desire is to introduce all the basic, necessary skills for a quilter.  As you see there are 16 blocks, each is 12″ with the sashing (white space between blocks) the quilt finishes at 58 inches square.  I have the fabrics pictured in the quilt, 1/2 yard of 8 fabrics.  More than enough :)  if you are pulling scraps the largest square we cut will be 7 3/4″, just find lots of scraps that … Read More »
