Sewing with Kids

Sewing Moments

Today we are back to school and the busy days of spring.  We had a relaxed week over spring break, and the girls all fit some sewing in too!

Last summer when I was sewing with the kids, Owen made a monster.  And recently, the girls started asking to make their own.  We made plans to sew over spring break, the picture above is Emmalie adding a 1/2″ seam allowance to her soon to be friend.

Later we set up two machines and got busy!

Emmalie is very careful to watch her fingers.

Sophia was excited to applique her monster’s face in place.

They’ve had so much fun playing with them, that I haven’t managed a picture of them all together!  They are all original, … Read More »

My kids all want to learn to sew, and so we are on a sewing adventure, and they hope to end up with new quilts handmade at their own hands! Check out what we made each week this summer!  Sewing with Kids — week 1, week 2, week 3, week 4, week 5, week 6, and week 7.

Where has our summer gone!  I can hardly believe I’ve managed to be so consistent with these posts, thanks for your encouragement along the way!  Check out our progress this week —

As of yesterday morning, Owen, Sophia, and Emmalie’s quilts are all complete!  To make these quilts, simple, and a fast finish for the kiddos, we backed them with fleece, and did not include any batting.  They are comfy and cozy, with a special meaning since they made them!

Of course, … Read More »

Sewing With Kids — Week 7

My kids all want to learn to sew, and so we are on a sewing adventure, and they hope to end up with new quilts handmade at their own hands!  Join us as we sew through the summer each week!  Sewing with Kids — week 1, week 2, week 3, week 4, week 5, and week 6.

This week, Sophia had a big week – she made her quilt top yesterday!  Look at this smile –

Earlier in the summer she had selected a Hoopla Layer Cake, and patiently waited until I gave her the green light to actually make it.  Over the weekend while I was working on my doll quilt, she was hovering; really wanted to be sewing.  So I had her pull out her Layer Cake and match up the pieces that she … Read More »

Sewing With Kids — Week 6

I’ve been working on a pouch for a fun swap on flickr, I’ll post more on that soon, and purchased a *few* zippers on etsy.  Of course, showing the girls they decided that they would love little zipper pouches too.  So today, I gave Emmalie a leg up on the scary world of zippers!   Zippers don’t have to be difficult and if you start with something simple like this pouch, they are actually a lot of fun!

Here’s what you need … Read More »

Sewing With Kids — Week 5

My kids all want to learn to sew, and so we are on a sewing adventure, and they hope to end up with new quilts handmade at their own hands!  Join us as we sew through the summer each week!  Sewing with Kids — week 1, week 2, week 3, and week 4.

This week we made a simple pillowcase, which could be altered slightly to use for laundry collection.  Sophia was the only one willing to start the project with me, but now they all want their own – of course!  So we will be sewing pillowcases the rest of the afternoon.  I learned this method at guild last year when we made pillowcases for a women’s shelter, they are quick and simple!

Start with 2 yards of fabric, and cut a 9″ strip off of both, to make 2 standard size pillow cases.

Sewing with Kids — Week 4

Owen and I have been talking about making a monster, and finally took an hour to do it!  Look at this face —

He’s so happy to have “made” a new friend!  Here’s what we did:

I taped a few blank pieces of paper together, and asked Owen to draw his monster.  He started with the eyes, and legs, then I encouraged the addition of a head and arms.  Simple and fun sketches are perfect!

Then we cut him out, to use as a … Read More »

Sewing with Kids — Week 3

My kids all want to learn to sew, and so we are on a sewing adventure, and they hope to end up with new quilts handmade at their own hands!  Join us as we sew through the summer each week!  Sewing with Kids — Week 1, and Week 2.

This week I gave Emmalie a chance to work at the machine, and a few options for what to sew.  She selected a pin cushion, so she can use it in future sewing endeavors – however, we used Lapel Stick today!

We made a simple log cabin block with 2 1/2″ squares/strips for a top.

Some of the process:

I’m right there over her shoulder, encouraging her to step on the gas, and hold the threads.

Making our way around the center fishy … Read More »

Sewing with Kids — Week 2

Wow – It’s been a busy week!  I can’t wait to see how everyone’s challenge is going, hopefully you have made some good progress on your goal!

I was glad to see so many of you excited about stitching with your kids last week.  We had a lot of fun, and the kids all hung their stitchery up on the wall in their rooms.  Ideally we would make a pillow, or quilt block with them…I’ll have to see about pulling them together for a fun project later, for now they are enjoying them.

This week, I moved to the sewing machine, and started with the child that wasn’t in the tub, or busy playing – Sophia.  Sophia (6 years old) jumped at the chance to sew on the machine, and “wants to sew every day!” – I didn’t realize how contagious sewing … Read More »

Sewing with Kids — Week 1

Posted on June 14th, by Amy in Sewing with Kids. 37 comments

Are you ready?  Yesterday afternoon, I spent some quality time sewing with all 4 of my kids!  Usually I’ll work one on one with them as they are interested in helping, everyone wanted in yesterday!

My favorite place to start, is with floss and a hoop!  It’s like coloring with thread – fun!  The girls have all had a chance to work a hoop and needle before, so they had an idea of what they wanted to do.  Owen, while young had a lot of fun pushing and pulling the needle, while I re-threaded the needle countless times.

To begin, I had a selection of fabrics, and floss that they could choose from.  And since I had all four kids, I started with the youngest first, to keep him busy!

Summer Series — Sewing with Kids

Thank you for your input on the Wonderland blocks! I’m still uncertain, as to what to do – 15 of you said even quarters, 9 wonky, and 6 said leave them alone.  Part of me really wants to work beyond my usual geometric and go wonky, but I’m not certain yet.  I’ll let you know when I figure it out!

Moving on –

I’ve had this idea on my brain for a while, and thought it would be a good summer project with my girls home from school.  I have already taught Ella (11), to sew, Emmalie (7) and Sophia (6) have expressed interest too — so the thought is to share project ideas and teaching methods for small kids to learn to sew in a fun way.  That way it’s always fun, and something to look forward to!
