Quiltcast #44 – Adventures in Hand Appliqué

Posted on July 10th, by Amy in podcast, Quiltcast. 2 comments

Today both April and I are catching up with each other; and you!

My new, just for me project, is hand appliqué. I never thought I would be interested in it, but I’m loving it! So we are chatting about the different ways to prepare pieces for appliqué, and some tips and tools to put to use while stitching.

Craftsy class:  Big Techniques from Small Scraps with Sarah Fielke.

I’ve also referenced Jill Finely’s videos with Fat Quarter Shop, for a slightly different approach, but really loved the small project in the Big Techniques from Small Scraps class to get me started. Isn’t it cute :

Tools :

Starch with Freezer Paper.

Paintbrush

Applique Pins

Glue Baste-It

Straw Needles Size 11

Do you use a hoop to work your hand appliqué?

Here’s a few books that have some very fun appliqué projects :

Posted on June 11th, by Amy in podcast, Quiltcast. 2 comments

Catch up with both Amy and April this week! Amy talks more about the Common Threads event last week, and our current projects.

There’s a lot of patience and perseverance involved in submitting project and pattern ideas to magazine editors, but we have a few pointers for you too!

Get to know the magazine that you want to submit a pattern to, and what the editors are looking for in the submissions.

Include color and/or size options.

Think ahead, 6 to 12 months ahead.

A bio, of your past work.

Share a link or two, to your past work, online.

Look for submission information on the magazine website.

Expect a contract, with payment and shipping details.

The pattern maybe written for you, or you may need to write it. Check with the editor as you sign your contract.

You never know until you try!

Quiltcast #34 – Designing Fabric

Posted on April 23rd, by Amy in podcast, Quiltcast. No Comments

While fabric designing newbies, we thought you might like to know more about our approach to fabric design, and how we got here. Join April and I as we share what we know :)

Our process and inspiration – both unique, with similar results in fabric design.

I tend to use and manipulate shapes in Illustrator, starting in black and white, then add the neutral palette.

April sketches, then scans it in to Illustrator, to manipulate the design and add color.

Books we both have used as resources :

A Field Guide to Fabric Design
Mastering the Art of Fabric
Digital Textile Design

How to Enter the World of Textile Design

Spoonflower can be a great tool.

Designing fabric is not a fast process, something to be working toward as you develop your skills.
